Ever heard the characteristic cackling cries in the South African bushveld? That’s the sound of the spotted or laughing hyena, and this same laughter (which can sometimes be heard as far away as 5km) can now be heard at Emerald Resort & Casino’s Animal World.
“We’re pleased to announce that Animal World Zoo has taken in two spotted hyena cubs,” says Emerald Resort & Casino’s Marketing Executive Tanuja Gangabishun.
“They are doing really well and are adapting to their new environment,” confirms Elana Smalberger , Zoo Manager at Emerald Resort & Casino’s Animal World. “The cubs arrived at the beginning of June, but we have only recently moved them into their new environment.”
Although only six months old, a fully grown spotted hyena can grow to almost 2m long, with a dark, bushy tail measuring 25-30cm. Females are heavier than males, and can weigh up to 82kg. Within the clans a social hierarchy exists and again the female ranks higher than the male.
Their laughter is commonly a series of whoops, grunts, yells, growls, giggles and cackles and is used as a form of communication.
“These incredible and highly intelligent creatures can be seen (and sometimes heard) at Animal World, next to the Monkey Island,” concludes Tanuja. “Animal World is open every day from 09h00 to 16h15. Besides the hyenas, be on the look out for hippos and flamingos, iguanas and antelope, monkeys, lions, snakes and so much more.”

Ringo, so nicknamed by his mother at a very early age because of his singing and drumming talents, is an extremely popular performer and producer with a career that dates back to 1986. He is a constant crowd pleaser and firm favourite at any musical event nationally and internationally.
There are many resources that describe the benefits of reading. Advantages are numerous and include improved neurological, psychological, social and linguistic aspects in the form of a richer vocabulary, correct grammar, improved writing, better spelling and more articulate oral communication.This challenge was aimed at local schools in the Sedibeng area. Each selected school put their three best readers forward to compete in three categories, namely, Junior Primary, Senior Primary and Secondary with the top three winners of each category winning educational prizes.
“Many local schools lack a lot of resources, and it’s here where we feel we can add value to a child’s future. We enthusiastically support our local community and look forward to creating an annual event where young learners will be encouraged to participate,” concludes Tanuja.

Popular Afrikaans performer Juanita du Plessis and her two talented kids, Ruan Josh and Franja, have joined forces to create a new album “Kaalvoetkinners”. They will be performing at Emerald Resort & Casino on Saturday, 7 July 2018.
This talented family will be performing songs from the album “Kaalvoetkinners” that features a few new songs like “Why Me Lord”, “Carry Me Home” and “Amazing Grace” in addition to their older favourite hits.
“It’s all about spending quality time with the family,” says Emerald Resort & Casino’s Marketing Executive Tanuja Gangabishun. “What better way than to kick back and enjoy a South African ‘braai’ combined with exceptional live entertainment!”
“The Emerald CSI committee thought that it would be a good gesture to add products that most ladies will use,” confirms Gloria Mokoana, Learning & Development Manager at Emerald Resort & Casino. “We firmly believe that hygiene in the community comes first and decided to add to the request by adding bath soaps, toothbrush and toothpaste. We wanted to give the ladies something that they can take home and be able to use for some time.”
“We, as a company, are always enthusiastically supporting our local community and look forward to seeing many local girls being selected for the higher netball levels,” concludes Tanuja.
